Two educators turned deputies swiftly responded to aid an 88-year-old woman during a medical emergency.
EVADALE, Texas — Two Jasper County deputies who previously spent their careers in education put their quick thinking to work Sunday during a medical emergency that left an 88-year-old woman disoriented and unable to move, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Chuck Havard said he received a call around 12:25 p.m. from a Beaumont woman reporting that her mother was experiencing a medical crisis inside her home in Evadale. The caller told dispatchers that the woman, 88-year-old Dorothy McShan, appeared disoriented and immobile.
Havard, along with Deputy Morgan and Deputy Tipton, responded to the residence. When they arrived, they found an open window at the back of the home. Havard said Morgan suggested Tipton climb through to gain access.
Tipton entered through the window and found McShan inside. Family members soon arrived and took her into their care, according to the sheriff.
Havard noted that both Morgan and Tipton previously worked in education before joining law enforcement and are among five newly hired deputies who recently completed the department’s field training program.
All five are now operating as single-officer units, a change Havard said has already improved response times and increased patrol visibility across the county.
“I couldn’t be more proud of them and the exceptional service they are providing to the citizens of Jasper County,” Havard said.
