HOUSTON — Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña just made an off-the-field play that’s grabbing attention. Peña posted a series of photos on Instagram revealing he’s in a relationship with professional soccer player Julia Grosso, giving fans a rare glimpse into his personal life.
In the photos, Peña and Grosso can be seen posing together and hanging out at a beach.
But who is Julia Grosso? Astros fans curious about Peña’s new match might be surprised to learn she’s a star in her own right, and her resume is as impressive as her highlight reels.
Who is Julia Grosso?
Grosso, 24, recently signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Red Stars, according to a press release from the team.
A fixture on the Canadian Women’s National Team (CANWNT), Grosso is no stranger to the spotlight. She scored the decisive penalty kick in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics final, clinching gold for Canada against Sweden.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Red Stars and can’t wait to hit the field every weekend and give it my all,” Grosso said in the release. “I’ve heard that Red Stars fans are super passionate, so I’m excited to be part of that.”
Her international career began early, debuting for Canada’s U-15 squad at just 13 years old. She’s since worked her way up through the ranks, eventually earning a spot on the senior team in 2017. Grosso was part of Canada’s squad at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and helped qualify the team for the 2023 tournament by scoring key goals in the CONCACAF W Championship.
On the club level, Grosso recently wrapped up a successful stint with Juventus FC in Italy’s Serie A Women’s League. Over three seasons, she scored 10 goals in 76 appearances, won three major trophies, and was named Serie A Midfielder of the Season in 2022.
Before heading overseas, Grosso made waves in the NCAA with the Texas Longhorns. A standout midfielder, she scored 21 goals over 60 appearances and earned multiple All-Big 12 honors.
While Peña stars for the Astros at Minute Maid Park, Grosso will soon be dazzling crowds at SeatGeek Stadium in Chicago.
