Jewelry thief at large after taking off with $40K in San Marcos heist

The store owner said one of his employees attempted to stop the suspect by grabbing onto the getaway vehicle, suffering injuries in the process.

SAN ANTONIO — One week after a daring daylight robbery at a local jewelry store, San Marcos police are still searching for two suspects who made off with an estimated $40,000 worth of stolen jewelry.

The theft occurred just before 4 p.m. on August 7 at Kings Jeweler, when a man posing as a customer suddenly grabbed a tray of jewelry and fled the store, according to owner Minhaj Baig. Surveillance video shows the man exiting the business within two minutes of entering.

“It’s a big loss for us,” Baig said in an interview. “It will take us a lot of time to recover this.”

Baig said one of his employees attempted to stop the suspect by grabbing onto the getaway vehicle, suffering injuries in the process.

“That guy, we gave him two days off to rest,” Baig said. “He got hurt on his hand, his legs—everything was wounded.”

Police believe the suspect fled in a white Kia Forte, possibly a 2014 to 2016 model, with a fake temporary license plate. A second suspect was reportedly in the passenger seat. The car has not yet been located.

The first suspect is described as a man in his 20s or 30s, approximately six feet tall, wearing a San Diego Padres cap and displaying a prominent tattoo on his hand.

While Baig says he is grateful no lives were lost, the emotional toll remains.

“I’m also thankful my team is safe—that is the most important thing,” he said.
