The closures include a location in San Antonio.
HOUSTON — Joann, the crafting and fabrics retailer, plans to close more than half of its remaining stores after declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year.
The company filed a motion Wednesday in bankruptcy court seeking to shutter around 533 of its 800 U.S. locations. This includes four locations in the Houston area and 14 others in Texas.
The initial store closing list includes at least one location in all 50 states, except Hawaii.
The states with the most stores closing include California (61), Florida (36), Pennsylvania (33), Ohio (33) and Michigan (33).
“Right-sizing the store footprint is a critical part of the efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN,” an update posted Wednesday on the case background said.
A company spokesperson told CNN in a statement: “This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve.”
This is the second time Joann has declared bankruptcy in less than 12 months. In April 2024, the company completed a restructuring that saw it delisted from the U.S. stock exchange and become a private company as part of a bankruptcy deal.
The company announced on Jan. 15 that it was seeking court approval in Delaware to begin the process of selling “substantially all of its assets,” according to a press release about the move.
