SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio said goodbye Thursday to a civil rights leader and champion for education.
Joe Bernal died on Jan. 25 at the age of 97. Described in his obituary as a “groundbreaking political leader,” Bernal served in the Texas House and Senate from 1964-1972, where he led efforts to create the state’s first bilingual education law.
He was also instrumental in the creation of the University of Texas at San Antonio and the UT Health Science Center.
Born on the city’s west side, Bernal attended Lanier High School and served in World War II. After his career in politics, he became an assistant superintendent at Harlandale ISD.
Northside ISD named a middle school after him in 2014.
On Thursday, Bernal’s life was celebrated with a mass at San Fernando Cathedral. He was then brought to his final resting place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
