Judge Rose Sosa orders continued detention for a teen accused of stabbing another student during a fight near Stevens High School.
SAN ANTONIO — Mincing few words, Juvenile Judge Rose Sosa ordered continued detention for a 16-year-old accused of stabbing another teen in the back.
Of the teen who has no previous criminal history, and who had asked to be released from custody, Sosa said “I read the report. He was engaged in the altercation. The person who was stabbed is not engaged. He was trying to pull people off and was stabbed in the back.”
The violent incident happened near John Paul Stevens High School near Potranco Road and North Ellison Drive Monday afternoon.
San Antonio police said they were called to the area to investigate a report that a person had been stabbed.
The preliminary report says high school students were fighting in an open field in front of the school.
The victim was able to describe his attacker to police, who said they found their suspect nearby and detained him.
Police say a second injured victim had superficial knife wounds that were treated by a school nurse.
While admitting it is still early in the investigation, Judge Sosa said school administrators outlined a bleak picture of what happened.
“Now whether that shakes out or not, what I’m telling you is based on the current report and the statements admin gave (Probation Officer) Ms. Wilson, that he agreed to bring weapons and have this fight, at this time I am going to detain him.”
The teen’s attorney told the judge that since the teen had never been in trouble and his parents were anxious to take him home, he should be released.
Both parents stood up for the teen during the proceeding. The teen’s father said his son was a good kid who got into a bad situation, while the mother said she is home full time and would be available to offer full supervision.
An update on the condition of the injured teen is not available, but on scene, police said he was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
The detained teen will return to court in ten working days for another hearing.
Since court personnel said administrators described a situation where two groups of combatants had agreed to fight with weapons, we asked the NISD spokesman if any other students are facing disciplinary consequences related to the disturbance.
When we get a response we will share it.
