SAN ANTONIO — A judge granted custody of a puppy, who was allegedly beaten by his owner a couple of weeks ago, to San Antonio Animal Care Services Monday afternoon, officials say.
According to ACS, Havanah Miller, 23, is the woman seen in a viral video whipping her 3-month old puppy with a belt. ACS got a warrant for the dog and arrested Miller on Jan. 18 on a animal cruelty charge.
Miller was expected to appear in court for her criminal charge on Monday but the hearing was rescheduled for a later date.
A municipal court hearing was also held on Monday to determine who should be granted custody of the puppy named “Thanos.”
Miller reportedly did not show up to the custody hearing and the judge ultimately awarded Animal Care Services custody of the puppy. Experts had said that based on evaluations “Thanos” has suffered psychological damage, according to ACS.
Despite the judge’s ruling, the legally mandated appeals process must be completed before a final decision on the puppy’s permanent home is made.
ACS officials say the poodle is currently being cared for by an experienced foster and his health has improved.
“San Antonio Animal Care Services remains committed to ensuring not only the puppy’s well-being but the integrity of the investigation throughout the entirety of the legal process,” ACS said in a statement.
