SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai gave the 2025 State of the County address with the Metro San Antonio Chamber Wednesday at a downtown hotel.
Judge Sakai has been in public service for nearly thirty years, with twenty six of those years serving on the district court bench and then moving over to the executive branch of county government, succeeding his friend and mentor, Judge Nelson Wolff.
“I’ve come to realize that leadership is about decision making, and I think that’s what’s a fundamental aspect of being a leader,” said Judge Sakai. “Also, two, what I’ve learned is that you have to have a process and a system of accountability. That’s how you are successful.”
Judge Sakai said that is what he has tried to do for the county, bring a sense of accountability. The judge attributes his success to his staff.
“Vision is important because that tells the community where you wanna go,” said Judge Sakai. “But let me make this statement. Vision without execution is yet a dream. And so that’s the reason why I want a special recognition for my A team, the county staff.”
While in office, Judge Sakai said his biggest focus has been on public safety, public health, especially mental health, and economic development.
During Wednesday’s address, the judge said that 100 new deputies have been added to the sheriff’s office.
Judge Sakai says there will also be a new department focused on mental health.
He highlighted the on-going conversations on Project Marvel and the possibility of a county venue tax.
Judge Sakai will be running for re-election in 2026, 13 months from now.
