Judson ISD board set to finalize elementary school closures after emotional meetings

Judson ISD leaders are expected to decide which three elementary schools will close as the district faces declining enrollment.

SAN ANTONIO — Closure conversations are reaching a turning point at Judson ISD.

The school board is set to finalize which three elementary schools will close by the end of the school year, following weeks of discussion and emotional public meetings.

District leaders previously voted to close four campuses, three elementary schools and one middle school. Judson Middle School has already been confirmed for closure. Now, trustees must decide which elementary campuses will shut their doors next year.

A shortlist was presented to the board just days ago. Schools recommended for potential closure include Park Village Blended Learning Academy, Rolling Meadows Elementary and Ed Franz Leadership Academy.

Over the weekend, trustees held a special meeting that drew passionate testimony from teachers, parents and students. Many pleaded with board members to reconsider.

“Breaking us up is going to break up that family,” said one Miller Point teacher during public comment. “I hope you take that into consideration. I know it’s not an easy decision.”

At Ed Franz Leadership Academy, Principal Kari Savage-Egg urged trustees to visit the campus before casting their final votes.

“If you walk our halls, you see something rare — children who believe deeply in who they are becoming,” she said. “Many of you have witnessed this firsthand.”

District officials say the closures are driven by declining enrollment and a growing number of families choosing alternative education options.

The board is expected to take final action Tuesday night. KENS 5 will continue to follow the decision and its impact on families across the district.
