The district says it hopes to close the gap without layoffs by closing open positions and consolidating roles.
SAN ANTONIO — More than 500 positions could be cut at Judson ISD as the board makes it way toward a balanced budget. The district is facing a deficit of a little over $35 million.
The district needs to cut 536 positions and it is already cutting 284 positions by closing four schools, including three elementary schools and one middle school. That measure was approved earlier this year. That leaves around 250 positions left to be cut. However, the district has 307 open positions.
The district hopes that, instead of laying off people, they can slide them into the currently open positions they are hiring for right now. They believe there will be some shuffling,
Most of the positions they are cutting are teachers, and then auxillery staff. They say only 13 positions in administrations would need to be cut.
Only one board member was against the cuts.
The Judson ISD board still needs to vote on a final budget.
