K-9 Maverick helps uncover 32K of cocaine hidden in semi-truck batteries during I-35 stop

A Selma police K-9 helped officers find more than 30 kilos of cocaine hidden inside tractor batteries during a traffic stop on I-35, authorities say.

SELMA, Texas — A police K-9 helped Selma officers uncover a major drug bust during an early morning traffic stop along Interstate 35.

According to the Selma Police Department, officers stopped a semi-truck and trailer in the 16000 block of I-35 early on Thursday, March 10.

Police said the 38-year-old driver began giving conflicting information and appeared increasingly nervous, prompting officers to call in K-9 Maverick to assist.

Maverick alerted officers to the presence of narcotics, giving them probable cause to search the truck’s cab.

During the search, officers discovered four bundles wrapped in black trash bags. Inside each bag was a large tractor battery that had been hollowed out.

Investigators said the batteries were packed with tightly wrapped bundles that later tested positive for cocaine.

In total, police say they seized more than 32 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside the batteries.

The driver was arrested and later admitted he knew the drugs were inside the truck, according to police.

He was taken to the Guadalupe County Jail and charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance, Penalty Group 1, over 400 grams.

Police credited K-9 Maverick’s alert with helping officers locate the hidden drugs during the stop
