KENS 5 anchor Jessica Coombs plans to depart station in March

The versatile journalist, who has anchored both the 4:30 a.m. news and the 5-7 a.m. traffic report, will leave the KENS 5 Morning News on March 7.

SAN ANTONIO — Jessica Coombs is leaving KENS 5 after more than two years on the morning anchor desk, the station announced Friday.

Coombs, a versatile journalist who has anchored both the 4:30 a.m. news and the 5-7 a.m. traffic report, will make her final appearance on the KENS 5 Morning News on March 7.

“San Antonio is a special place. I want to thank the wonderful people who make this city what it is,” she said. “Early hours are always made easier when you know your ‘why,’ and for me, it has always been each of you.”

Coombs recently was honored with a Lone Star Emmy Award for Best Hard News Report for her reporting work on “Construction Obstruction,” which investigated how long-term construction projects negatively affect small-business owners.

She has spent time volunteering in the San Antonio community and representing KENS 5 at charity events.

“Jessica has been great to work with and has made a positive impact in this community. I hate to see her go but wish her all the best,” said Jack Acosta, KENS 5 news director.

Coombs graduated with honors from Brigham Young University with degrees in broadcast journalism and music. As a professional pianist and music teacher for two decades, Jessica has performed around the world, including at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

“Thank you for trusting me with your stories and for sharing your mornings with me. Words fall short expressing my gratitude to our phenomenal team at KENS. We care about this community, and it shows,” she said. “It’s not very often you get to work with people whose work comes from the heart. I am profoundly grateful I’ve had the chance to do just that here at KENS.”
