KENS 5 names Sarah Duran as 4:30 a.m. news and traffic anchor

Duran brings more than a decade of journalism experience to her expanded role leading KENS 5’s early newscast.

SAN ANTONIO — KENS 5 announced Tuesday that Sarah Duran has been promoted to 4:30 a.m. news and traffic anchor, a role that reflects her deep roots in San Antonio, newsroom versatility and growing impact on morning coverage.

Duran came to KENS 5 in November 2021 and joined the station’s morning team in July 2023 as a reporter. She soon expanded her responsibilities by filling in on the traffic desk before stepping into anchoring duties.

Duran is a graduate of John Marshall High School and Texas State University. Journalism runs deep in her family history; her grandparents once owned La Prensa, San Antonio’s only bilingual newspaper during its operation, helping shape the city’s media landscape for generations.

Duran is a two-time Emmy-nominated journalist, recognized for her coverage of the Uvalde tragedy and an ambush shooting involving seven San Antonio police officers.

“Through my work as a reporter and my familiarity with San Antonio, I discovered new interests, including a real passion for transportation journalism,” Duran said. “It’s a blessing to continue my career in my hometown to help viewers move through their morning commute with confidence.”

Recent severe weather further underscored that mission. Flash flooding across San Antonio in June and in Kerrville in July highlighted the life-saving importance of real-time traffic and road condition information.

“Last year’s flooding served as a powerful reminder of how critical timely, accurate traffic information is for keeping people safe,” Duran said.

KENS 5 news director Jack Acosta said Duran’s promotion reflects both her professional growth and strong connection to the community.

“It’s great to have Sarah at KENS,” Acosta said. “She was born and raised here, and she’s been part of this community all her life. She really is San Antonio’s Own.”

Duran will anchor and deliver traffic reports weekdays beginning at 4:30 a.m., helping viewers start their mornings informed, prepared and safely on the move.
