Here are Vinnie Vinzetta’s picks for the best South Texas football teams this week.
SAN ANTONIO — Week 8 of Texas high school football in the books, and with the playoffs picture becoming clearer here are Vinnie Vinzetta’s picks for the best area teams.
No. 5: Steele Knights
Ranked fifth in Week 7
The Mules are 7-0 and have won each of their last six games by double-digits. They should be able to extend that streak against the 1-6 Edison Bears on Friday night.

No. 4: John Jay Mustangs
Ranked third in Week 7
Another 7-0 program, the Mustangs enjoyed a bye week last week—and nobody gets penalized for that. They’ve earned the No. 4 spot… for now.
No. 3: Harlan Hawks
Ranked fourth in Week 7
After holding off Sotomayor in OT two weeks ago, the Hawks had no trouble with Holmes over the weekend, winning 49-12. Harlan is 8-0 and gets the aforementioned undefeated Mustangs in the NISD game of the week.

No. 2: Johnson Jaguars
Ranked second in Week 7
The Jags were second last week, and they’ll stay right there after a hard-fought loss to Reagan. That dropped Johnson to 6-1, and they’ll be looking to rebound against 2-5 Marshall on Saturday.
No. 1: Reagan Rattlers
Ranked first in Week 7
There’s no doubt which team stays on top this week. The Reagan Rattlers are 7-0 after defeating their rival Jaguars 41-27, and will look to stay undefeated against Churchill on Friday night.
