The second week of gridiron action saw many local contenders facing early tests. Not all of them passed.
SAN ANTONIO — Week 2 of South Texas high school football is now one for the books, with major wins secured by Steele, Holmes and Judson. There are some tough calls to make in this week’s power rankings, but made they must be.
As a result, Smithson Valley, New Braunfels and Reagan have all dropped out of the KENS 5 Top 5.
Read on for Vinnie’s picks of the top area programs after two weeks.
No. 5: Alamo Heights Mules (2-0)
No change from last week.
The Mules held off 6A powerhouse Churchill last week, 21-7, and improved to 2-0. They visit New Braunfels Canyon in Week 3.
No. 4: Southwest Dragons.
Not ranked last week.
Take note of Southwest. They’re now 2-0 with wins over Harlandale and Lockhart under their belt. The offense is a big reason why: The Dragons scored 35 and 36 points, respectively, in those two games.
Senior quarterback AJ Franco tossed three touchdowns against the Lions, and has five passing scores through two games, according to stats compiled by MaxPreps.
No. 3: Davenport Wolves
Not ranked last week.
How about Davenport? They handled Veterans Memorial in Week 1 by double-digits and brought the same ferocity to their matchup with Kerrville Tivy, winning 52-34. A primetime matchup is in store this week against the undefeated Pieper Warriors.
No. 2: Pieper Warriors
Not ranked last week.
Speaking of… the Warriors have scored 38 points in consecutive games, and those were wins over major teams in Boerne and Johnson. That looks good on paper! They’ve been off and running to begin the season, and look motivated after their playoff run ended in the quarterfinals last year. Senior quarterback Cayden Keeth has a cool 72% completion percentage to start the season, according to stats compiled by MaxPreps.
No. 1: Steele Knights
Ranked first last week.
For the first two weeks of the season, the top spot belongs to the Knights. Their offense was in clampdown mode Saturday night at Comalander Stadium, where they rolled past the very good Reagan Rattlers, 62-35, in the teams’ first matchup since 2021.
The Knights are an impressive 2-0 to begin their 2024-25 campaign, tallying an average of 55.5 points per game.

Honorable mentions
Also worth shouting out this week are Harlan, Brandeis, South San, John Jay, Somerset, Boerne Champion, Southwest Legacy, Central Catholic, Holy Cross, Uvalde, Wimberley and Poth. All are 2-0 in the early goings of the season, which is easier said than done.
