KENS 5 Top 5: Which San Antonio football teams reign supreme after the regular season?

As the regular season turns to playoff action, here are the best high school programs around the Alamo City area.

SAN ANTONIO — The Texas high school football regular season is in the book, after many blowouts, highlight-reel plays and dominant stretch runs. Ahead of playoff action arriving Thursday, here are my picks for the cream of the crop in the San Antonio area.

Stats are according to MaxPreps.

No 5: Southwest Dragons (10-0)

Ranked fifth last week.

The Dragons secured their perfect regular season with Thursday’s 30-7 win over Laredo Cigarroa. The district champions are set to open the playoffs Friday night hosting the 5-5 Segun Matadors. Can seniors Jah Mills (10 rushing touchdowns, 103 rushing yards per game) and AJ Franco (20 passing touchdowns, 123.9 QB rating) keep making noise in the postseason?

No. 4: Steele Knights (9-1)

Ranked fourth last week.

The Knights close out the season at 9-1 with an impressive 70-14 win over Buda Johnson. Steele’s only blemish this season: A 41-16 loss in Week 4 at the hands of mighty Austin Westlake.

The Knights start the postseason Thursday night hosting Laredo Alexander.

No. 3: Alamo Heights Mules (10-0)

Ranked third last week.

The Mules also went undefeated in the regular season, and were off last weekend as a reward. Junior running back DK Garza (128.3 yards per game, 17 total scores) and the Mules host Corpus Christi Ray in the first round of playoff action Friday night at Orem Stadium.

No. 2: Pieper Warriors (10-0)

Ranked second last week.

At No. 2, it’s Pieper! Mark them down, too, for 10 regular-season wins. The Warriors welcome Southwest Legacy to open the playoffs on Friday. In just the program’s fourth year, Pieper is hoping to go further than last season, when they lost to Liberty Hill in state quarterfinals.

No. 1: Brennan Bears (9-1)

Ranked first last week.

And back at No. 1 – where they’ve found themselves in these rankings for the past seven weeks – it’s a resilient Bears squad that responded to a season-opening loss to the Reagan Rattlers by rattling off nine straight wins.

Guess who junior quarterback Cayden Glass and company draw for Round 1 of the playoffs Friday night at Farris Stadium? That’s right: the 7-3 Reagan Rattlers.

Those are my final regular-season picks for the KENS 5 Top 5! Be sure to like, comment and share. We look forward to the second season… the playoff season. You can track your high school’s progress here
