Officials disqualified Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon for making contact with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay during the final laps of the race.
PARIS, France — The second-fastest finisher of the women’s 5,000 meters, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, was disqualified after she traded elbows with world-record holder Gudaf Tsegay with two laps left.
There was a back and forth of pushing between the reigning world champion Kipyegon and world record holder Gudaf Tsegay as Tsegay moved to the front in the final 800 meters. Her lead was short-lived, but the contact ended with Kipyegon’s disqualification.
Kipyegon’s Kenyan teammate Beatrice Chebet pulled ahead in the final 50 meters and won the gold with a winning time of 14:28.56.
Kipyegon’s ouster elevated Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands to a silver medal. Hassan will also race in the 10,000 and marathon, trying to duplicate her three distance medals from the Tokyo Games.
