KERRVILLE, Texas — Bus drivers from Kerrville ISD have received a special award for their part in saving almost 1,000 people during the devastating Kerr County flooding.
The Courage Project has honored these bus drivers alongside 19 other individuals and organizations across the country with the Courage Project Award. These recipients “reflect the best of the American spirit by helping their neighbors and building bridges across communities.”
The courageous acts came during the July 4th floods that devastated Kerr County killing more than 100 people.
During the flooding along the Guadalupe River, 14 Kerrville ISD bus drivers and coaches drove their school buses into dangerous waters even though there were damaged bridges amongst other dangerous circumstances. They were able to rescue about 900 children and counselors trapped at Camps La Junta, Mystic and Waldemar, The Courage Project says.
“Kerrville ISD is deeply honored and humbled to be named a recipient of the Courage Project Award,” said a spokesperson with Kerrville ISD.
