In Maverick County, Keryan Rashad Jones pleads not guilty to the deadly September shooting outside the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino.
MAVERICK COUNTY, Texas — The suspect accused in a deadly shooting outside the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel faced a judge Wednesday.
Prosecutors say 34-year-old Keryan Rashad Jones opened fire in September, killing two people and wounding several others.
Jones is now charged with multiple felonies, including murder and capital murder.
A plea of not guilty was entered by attorneys for the accused Kickapoo Casino shooter.
Keryan Jones attended his hearing from the Maverick County detention center via Zoom.
We learned from Judge Marivel Flores that Keryan Jones has been on suicide watch while in jail.
Jones’ attorney, Alfredo Padilla, put in a plea of not guilty with a request for additional time to review Jones’ mental state.
Judge Flores motioned to have Jones evaluated for incompetency, then sanity.
The prosecutors mentioned to Judge Flores that Jones has been making calls while in jail and seems competent.
“I want a psychiatrist to tell me how he is, then we’ll file for a motion of insanity,” Padilla said.
It was on Sept. 27 authorities say Jones opened fire outside the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino, sending people running for cover, killing two and injuring five.
Police say they were able to track Jones’ car as it left the casino eventually leading authorities on a brief chase to Wilson County until they brought him back to Eagle Pass.
Authorities have still not shared the motive for why the suspect carried out this shooting.
Once those evaluations are made, the court will reconvene on Feb. 2 at 10 a.m.
