MAVERICK COUNTY, Texas — A Maverick County court has approved a mental evaluation for the suspect in last year’s Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino shooting.

Investigators say Keryan Jones, 35, of San Antonio, opened fire in the casino’s parking lot just before midnight on September 27, killing two people and wounding five others. Jones allegedly fled the scene following the shooting and led officers on a brief high-speed chase before he was arrested in Wilson County and returned to Eagle Pass.

The victims of the shooting were identified as Marcus Antley, a retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, and Alicia Sanchez, a 32-year-old wife and mother of five from Dimmit County.

Jones is charged with nine felonies, including two counts of capital murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

KENS 5 previously reported Jones has been on suicide watch while in jail. Jones’ attorney, Alfredo Padilla, put in a plea of not guilty with a request for additional time to review Jones’ mental state.

Tuesday, the court heard the motion to be mentally evaluated and it was approved. Court officials say the results will be presented in the next court hearing on May 6. His trial is currently on the schedule for Oct. 13, and could last for about a week.

Authorities have still not shared the motive for why the suspect carried out this shooting.

Jones remains in custody at the Maverick County Jail with bonds totaling approximately $5 million
