Kids Who Make SA Great | One student has been described as sweet soul with a big heart

Joselyn Gomez spends her time volunteering in the community which has helped her to discover her calling.

SAN ANTONIO — SAN ANTONIO: For Joselyn Gomez, volunteering started out like it does for most kids, a requirement for school.

“…I would volunteer at the food bank, at the library and try to get them accumulated. And then it was the summer after freshman year. I started, looking at places to volunteer,” Joselyn Gomez said.

That’s when she discovered The Children’s Association for Maximum Potential or ‘Camp Camp’ out in Kerrville.

“…I just thought it was cool because…people with disabilities aren’t really accepted everywhere. So, I thought it was cool, like, they just had the most fun there,” Joselyn said. “They can do anything they want. They can canoe, they can fish, they can do art. You know, it was, even if they have, like, a physical disability, we’re trained out to put them in….it’s just so much training, but it’s so fun.”

And when Joselyn’s dad, Joseph, started losing his sight as a result of his diabetes.

Joselyn knew how to step in to help.

“She has to guide me and it’s to her maybe simply leading me home, but without her, I may fall, right, I may, I’ve hit a wall. Joselyn’s father, Joseph Gomez said. “And she doesn’t understand that, you know, it completely blocks out when I walk into a house.”

Her father, grateful for the help he received from his daughter as he was adjusting to his new reality.

All of Joselyn’s experiences creating a soft spot in her heart for those who may need a little more help in life.

“I think seeing just so many different people at camp, it definitely inspired me to want to also help them in the future,” Joselyn said.

Joselyn, now planning to attend Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles this fall, majoring in special education.

“It just really shows the type of person that she is, and what she’s going to develop to be. I’m very I’m very happy to see her develop that part of her,” Joselyn’s mom, Martha Elena Gomez said.

“She’s been so instrumental to other people. She doesn’t see it at the level me and mom see it, but it’s a lot,” Joseph Gomez said. “I’m just proud of how she took it on and how she loves what she does to help give back to the community.”

Putting passion back into her community is what makes Joselyn Gomez a kid who makes San Antonio great!
