La Vernia Bears sent off to first-ever State Semifinals with Texas-sized pep rally

More than 4,000 people showed up to cheer on the Bears, and local singer/songwriter Luke Prater performed his new single for the crowd.

LA VERNIA, Texas — The La Vernia Bears have made history, reaching the UIL State Final Four for the first time ever! But before they departed, the entire La Vernia community came together on Thursday to send them off with a Texas-sized pep rally.

Over 4,000 people showed up to cheer on the Bears, and local singer/songwriter Luke Prater performed his new single for the crowd as KENS 5 Sports Anchor Nate Ryan hyped the crowd up as the emcee.

After finishing 3rd in district, the Bears came out of the gates hot with a dominating 49-17 victory over Tuloso-Midway in the first round of the playoffs.

But, they knew they had a huge hill to climb if they were going to get past Round 2 against an undefeated LBJ Austin squad.

It proved to be a defensive battle as David took down Goliath in a 13-10 bout that ruined the Austin powerhouse’s chances of running the table with a perfect season.

The Bears were tested once more as they scratched and clawed their way to another narrow three-point victory over Calhoun in Round 3, before going on to dominate Bay City 42-24 in the Quarterfinals.

Now, the regional champion Bears will play Kilgore at 7:30 in the 4A State Semifinal on Friday night as they look to inch one step closer to becoming local legends in La Vernia forever.
