Lamar Jackson drops No. 8 trademark lawsuit against Troy Aikman

The trademark dispute over No. 8 between Lamar Jackson and Troy Aikman has been withdrawn, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

DALLAS — The fight for No. 8 is over.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson originally filed a trademark lawsuit in July 2024 against Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman, who also notably wore the No. 8 and uses the number on apparel and bags. FL101, the company behind the Aikman products, has several products featuring “EIGHT,” including a light beer brand, but Jackson was only disputing the bags and apparel.

At issue in the lawsuit was only the application to bags and apparel.

The Baltimore Sun was the first to report that the lawsuit had been withdrawn. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) confirmed to WFAA that the lawsuit had been withdrawn and the case was dismissed by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB).

Back when Jackson initially filed the suit, Aikman responded in a joking manner on social media.

“Hey Lamar, looks like a worthy conversation over a couple cold EIGHT beers! Maybe Steve Young can arbitrate,” Aikman quipped. (Young also wore the No. 8 during his playing days)

Jackson has also been utilizing the No. 8 for his apparel over the years. He launched Era 8 Apparel, which features T-shirts with the No. 8 on them.

This isn’t the first time Jackson has pursued legal action over No. 8. He also had a trademark battle with Dale Earnhardt Jr., according to a report from Pro Football Talk.
