Landscaper killed after being crushed by lawnmower at Northwest Vista College identified

The school says the worker had been employed at the campus for a long period of time.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the employee who died after being crushed by a commercial lawnmower at Northwest Vista College on Monday.

The landscaper has been identified as 55-year-old Jorge Gonzalez.

The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) confirmed Gonzalez was crushed by the lawnmower. Alamo Colleges said it was a commercial lawnmower users ride on, in contrast to a residential mower that’s usually pushed by hand.

Kristi Wyatt, the associate vice chancellor for communication with the Alamo Colleges District, said the emergency call came in to dispatch at 9:30 a.m. when a bystander called 911.

“Whether they work on our grounds or whether they work in a classroom really contributes to the success of the college and the success of our students, so (it’s) certainly a loss,” Wyatt said.

The school said Gonzalez had been employed at the campus for a long period of time.

“It’s always disheartening, it’s always tragic when we hear about an accident that occurs,” Wyatt said. “Our thoughts are just making sure everyone involved knows that they’re supported.”
