Last-minute REAL ID rush: San Antonio travelers navigate changes

Most travelers already have their REAL ID. But what happens if you don’t? Here’s what you need to know.

SAN ANTONIO — The deadline to have a REAL ID has arrived and luckily, TSA says 98% of Texans have their REAL ID.

If you don’t have one, you’ll have some trouble trying to board your flight or get into a federal building.

KENS 5 wanted to see how travelers at the San Antonio International Airport were holding up with this change.

Most travelers we met on Wednesday have their REAL ID. But what happens if you don’t?

Charity Lane, who was flying to Las Vegas, said she was a little worried.

“The adrenaline kicked in. Yes, it scared me,” said Lane.

Until she realized that the gold star was in the top right corner of her state-issued ID.

Visiting from Missouri, Anna made sure she could get home.

“Mine was a little late but I got it in time for the trip,” Anna said.

Kim Lovely is from New Hampshire and told KENS 5 she doesn’t have her REAL ID yet.

But Lovely assured she had her passport, so she could still get through TSA.

A passport, a military ID or birth certificate will work if you don’t have your REAL ID yet but TSA recommends showing up at least four hours before your flight if you don’t.

You can visit your local DMV after a reminder to get your new ID.

If you have any questions about the REAL ID when you get to the airport, they do have an information desk to help you out.
