Latin Grammy-winning Tejano artist David Lee Garza hospitalized in San Antonio

The Poteet native had fluid buildup in his lungs, his label said. He’s expected to remain hospitalized at least through the weekend.

SAN ANTONIO — David Lee Garza, the 68-year-old Tejano musician and Poteet native, was taken to a San Antonio hospital Friday and is being treated for fluid buildup in his lungs, his record label says.

As a result, “The Grandfather of Tejano” won’t be performing at scheduled concerts this weekend as he continues to be treated, according to a press release from Freddie Records. He was initially hospitalized “after experiencing shortness of breath and fatigue.”

“He is currently under observation and will remain hospitalized through the weekend as a precautionary measure,” the label added.

The frontman and accordionist of David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, Garza has frequently performed at San Antonio-area festivals and won the Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album in 2013—just one highlight of a decadeslong career. A household name in the genre, his group is credited with having helped launch the careers of renowned artists like Ram Herrera, Emilio Navaira and Jay Perez.

“We ask that you keep David in your prayers as he rests and recovers,” the band is quoted as saying in the release. “We look forward to being back on stage with him very soon.”
