Learning to fly | Partnership between UTSA and Air Force helps launch careers in aviation

The 12 students participating were chosen from over 2,000 applicants for the free program.

SAN ANTONIO — Right now 12 high school students from across the nation are in San Antonio learning how to fly and launch their careers in aviation.

They’re doing this a part of the Aim High Flight Academy, a new partnership between UTSA and the Air Force’s Air Education and Training Command.

The students are now wrapping up a three week program where they stay at UTSA and head to Stinson-Mission Municipal Airport where they are training up to seven hours a day learning how to fly planes.

The instructors are using three planes to train the students in pairs to complete daily assignments.

This is a free experience for the students and they were selected out from 2,000 applicants across the country.

Madelyn Bushong is one of the students coming here from Dothan, Alabama and says this experience will help her in her future.

“I want to, I want to be as much help to my country as possible, but I also wanna fly,” said Madelyn. “So obviously, going to the military would be one of the best options for me.”

Bushong says she has plans to join either the U.S. Navy or U.S. Air Force when she gets older.

Her next goal after the military is to be an airline pilot.

By the end of this program the students will have earned 15 flight hours, giving them a head start in their futures.
