LeBron James teases a major ‘Decision’ announcement, sparking retirement rumors

The 40-year-old basketball star posted a cryptic message on his social media pages Monday, calling the announcement “The Second Decision.”

WASHINGTON — Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is teasing a major announcement, sparking talks about a possible retirement.

The 40-year-old basketball star posted a cryptic message on his social media pages Monday, calling the announcement “The Second Decision.”

“The decision of all decisions. October 7th. 12pm EST,” James said in his post.

The teaser announcement was accompanied by a 10-second video where James walks up to an empty chair before taking a seat. The video appears to be set on a basketball court, and a man is seated across from James.

The teaser video is reminiscent of James’ famous “The Decision” moment. In a televised 2010 special, James announced to the world that he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat.

James, who will turn 41 in December, is set to enter a record 23rd season in the NBA. Last season, he became the first player in the league’s history to score 50,000 combined points across regular-season and playoff games.

What is LeBron James’ announcement?

At this moment, it is not clear what James may be alluding to with his announcement.

However, some online were quick to speculate the announcement may be tied to his playing future or even a possible retirement.

The announcement comes just a week after James addressed his future during a Lakers media day.

“I don’t know when the end is,” James said on Monday, Sept 29. “But I know it’s a lot sooner than later.”

He added that he was “excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season.”

“The thing still pushing me is the fact that my love for the game is still high,” he said.

Some fans speculated the announcement could also be linked to a possible advertisement, as it lines up with the start of Amazon’s Prime Day sales event on Tuesday. James was featured in a commercial to promote the Prime Day event in July.
