Lightning-sparked fire burns 3,000 acres of Padre Island National Seashore

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A wildfire sparked by lightning continues to burn in the grasslands about three miles south of the Malaquite Visitor Center.

As of Sunday, the fire is 70% contained and has burned roughly 3,000 acres. Officials said there are still large unburned areas within the fire line.

The blaze is being managed for resource benefit, and crews said additional back burns may be conducted. These could produce more visible smoke in the area.

The Nueces County Emergency Services District #2 said in a social media post Sunday, “Mother Nature should kick some wind up a little bit today and push the smell of smoke out in the next 24 to 48 hours.”

Officials said is no threat to the public or to any structures, and officials confirm there are no road, beach, or facility closures in place.
