Lindsey Vonn shares new ‘bionic’ leg after latest surgery

The five-time Olympian shared Friday that she hopes she can be out of the hospital soon while recovering from her devastating crash at the Winter Games.

WASHINGTON — Five-time Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn shared an update Friday about her latest surgery after breaking her left leg in a devastating crash during the downhill event at the 2026 Winter Games.

In a post on X, Vonn said the surgery went well, and it took more than six hours.

She later shared an X-ray image of her leg and declared: “I’m bionic for real now.”

“I have been recovering from the surgery but pain has been hard to manage. Making slow progress but I hope I can be out of the hospital soon. Thank you all for the support,” she said.

Vonn, 41, crashed during a race on Feb. 8, suffering a complex tibia fracture. She had been skiing on an injured knee, as she ruptured her ACL in a training run nine days before.

To rehabilitate her left leg, Vonn underwent a week of treatment at an Italian hospital before she was transported back to the United States on Tuesday. Her latest surgery took place in the U.S.

During her recovery, Vonn shared that her dog, Leo, died just a day after her crash at the Winter Olympics.

“The day I crashed, so did Leo,” Vonn wrote.

Vonn said Leo had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer after surviving lymphoma a more than a year ago. She said the dog’s heart was failing, he was in pain, and his body “could no longer keep up with his strong mind.”

Vonn wrote that as she laid in a hospital bed the day after her crash, “we said goodbye to my big boy.”
