FRIDAY, JAN. 12

1:45PM: The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has extended an existing Weather Watch for Texas.

ERCOT says the watch, which was initially issued for Monday, Jan. 15-Wednesday, Jan. 17, is to due to the expected extreme cold weather, as well as the the possibility for higher electrical demand and lower reserves. They have now added Sunday, Jan. 14 to the Weather Watch window.

9:15AM: The National Weather Service says the likelihood of an Arctic air intrusion across much the East Texas area appears to be increasing for early next week.

According to the NWS, temperatures will plummet into the 20s and teens. Gusty winds will also make their way to the area, possibly dropping the wind-chills into the single digits.

“This may result in an extended period of freezing temperatures across our region in addition to some wintry precipitation starting late Sunday into Monday,” the NWS said. “Snow, sleet and ice accumulations cannot be ruled out in Monday through Monday night.”

The NWS says East Texas is facing an elevated threat for snow and ice accumulation, and a significant wind chill threat.

CBS19 Chief Meteorologist Brett Anthony says it’s possible this is the coldest air we see all winter.
