Live Oak PD: Killer still at large after what investigators believe was a targeted attack

Police are on alert after second fatal shooting in less than a month.

LIVE OAK, Texas — A quiet morning in Live Oak was shattered by gunfire early Wednesday morning, as police are now investigating the city’s second homicide in less than a month.

The deadly shooting happened just before 7:30 a.m. in the 6500 block of Ashby Point, near O’Connor Rd.

When officers arrived, they found a person shot and killed outside the residence, according to Live Oak Police Chief Michael Fratus.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released, and police have not shared any details regarding their age or gender.

Fratus said preliminary evidence shows the violence appears to be targeted.

“It appears this was not something that was random,” Fratus said. “But at this point, we’re following up on any leads.”

A neighbor reported hearing more than 30 gunshots ring out in the neighborhood, underscoring the chaos that unfolded in an otherwise quiet area.

Chief Fratus said investigators have recovered what they believe is the suspect vehicle — found abandoned elsewhere in the city.  It’s unclear whether the vehicle was stolen, but police confirmed it is not registered in Live Oak.

This morning’s killing marks the second homicide in the city in just a few weeks.

On May 14, a 79-year-old man was shot and killed near Pat Booker Road and I-35, the case remains unsolved.

Chief Fratus also confirmed that another shooting occurred just days ago — Saturday night — at Uncharted Adventures, also off Interstate 35. One person was injured in that incident but is expected to survive.

At this time, Fratus said investigators do not believe it’s connected to Tuesday’s murder, but they are not ruling out any theories.

Despite the recent spike in violent crime, Fratus reassured the public that these incidents are not reflective of the city overall.

“I would not say that this is representative of the city or its safety,” he said. “These are very unfortunate incidents. We pray that we get good leads and find justice for these victims.”

The Texas Rangers have been called in to assist with the investigation.

Investigators canvassed the neighborhood throughout the day, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence.

Fratus now with a plea for anyone with information on these unsolved murders to share with authorities.

“If you see something, say something. It might be the smallest detail that someone may think is insignificant, but actually could lead us in a direction that we need to be going,” said Fratus.

Authorities say there is no known threat to the general public at this time.
