SAN ANTONIO — As summer break begins, thousands of San Antonio children are losing access to the school meals they depend on.
The San Antonio Food Bank is stepping up to fill the gap and one local grandmother says the help couldn’t come at a better time.
Monica Garza never expected to be raising children again. But after her daughter passed away, she took in her young grandson and later took in her other daughter, son-in-law and five grandkids. That’s nine people under one roof and with inflation hitting hard, every grocery trip feels more difficult.
“You go to the groceries, $100 don’t buy much… We’re trying to stretch every dollar to cover all the necessities,” Garza said.
Garza is one of many San Antonians turning to the food bank for support. According to Michael Guerra with the San Antonio Food Bank, summer is their busiest and most critical time.
“People are always asking us, the food bank, when’s our highest time of need… and it’s the summer,” Guerra said.
The organization’s goal this season? Raise 20 million meals for children and families. Guerra says every dollar counts.
“Our goal for the summer is to raise 20 million meals for kids… $1 provides seven meals. It’s a great multiplier,” he said.
For Garza, the food she receives isn’t just filling—it’s changing the way her family eats.
“The amount of groceries that was given to me was overwhelming… Juices, vegetables, fruit… It goes a long way,” she said. “They bring snacks to schools and teach the kids to cook… We use lentils, veggies, even frozen fruit to make smoothies.”
She hopes more families who are struggling won’t be afraid to ask for help.
“Don’t be afraid to come forward. The help is out there. All you have to do is ask,” she said.
