AUSTIN, Texas — Several local lawmakers are backing Governor Greg Abbott’s newly announced plan to overhaul Texas’ property tax system. The proposal was unveiled as part of Abbott’s announcement that he will seek a fourth term as governor.
State Representatives Marc LaHood and Mark Dorazio of San Antonio, along with Carrie Isaac of New Braunfels, are among 25 Texas lawmakers who signed a letter supporting the governor’s plan.
Abbott’s property tax reform proposal includes five major components he intends to push in the next legislative session. Among them:
-
Requiring two-thirds voter approval for any property tax increases
-
Allowing citizen-led tax rate rollbacks
-
Eliminating school property taxes entirely
“Priority number one is stop the excess spending, contain it by limits on how much they can increase your spending,” Gov. Abbott said during the announcement.
In their letter, lawmakers wrote that they are committed to working with the governor to help Texas homeowners saying, “As current members of the Texas House, we stand ready to work on our policy proposals on property taxes and are fully supportive of securing the long-term affordability of property — the foundation of the American dream — for the people of Texas.”
The next Texas legislative session does not begin until 2027, and lawmakers will have to wait until then to take action on Abbott’s proposed reforms.
