Local leaders oppose alleged ICE detention facility on San Antonio’s east side

SAN ANTONIO — Local leaders are pushing back against what they say is a proposed immigration detention facility on San Antonio’s east side.

District 2 City Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez is urging residents to speak out against plans to turn a vacant warehouse into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center. The property is owned by Oakmont Industrial Group and is located at 542 S.E. Loop 410 near East Houston Street.

McKee-Rodriguez said the warehouse owner is allegedly close to finalizing a deal this week that would allow the federal government to use the site as an ICE facility. If the deal moves forward, the project would bypass the city’s usual permitting and approval process.

The councilman is asking residents to call the property owner and demand the sale be stopped.

State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins and Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert have also released statements opposing the proposal.

As of now, neither ICE nor Oakmont Industrial Group has confirmed the deal.
