Owner David Sumo Meltzer explains the restaurant right off I-10 has never had a burglary, until now.
SAN ANTONIO — Sumo Japanese Steakhouse is now looking at over $7,000 in losses after a man burglarized the restaurant on Jan. 27.
Owner David Sumo Meltzer explains the restaurant right off I-10 has never had a burglary, until now.
“We didn’t know until I got here around, 10:30 that morning. And I noticed that the window was broken, and I noticed the alarm did not go off,” Meltzer said. “So, when I saw that, I called the employees right away and we checked the cameras, and the cameras showed that a gentleman walked in.”
Around 4 a.m., surveillance video shows the moments a man covered head to toe broke into the teppanyaki restaurant, wrestling with the cash box, dropping tablets to the ground before he finally gets it free and walks out.
“He broke the window, climbed in, walked around, opened up the many doors, chemical closets and kind of trying to figure out his path around the restaurant,” Meltzer said.
The man did get away with $4,600 in cash.
“We felt violated, just like anybody would,” Meltzer said. “You know, this is something that has never happened to us. Normally, we don’t keep money in the drawer. This was a very odd, off time.”
Meltzer has reported the crime to San Antonio Police, and is offering a $500 reward to anyone that can help lead to an arrest.
“We have to protect our city,” he said. “We have to work together. And any information? We’re going to lock this guy up. We have to lock him up.”
