The family says they believe they know who did it and say their loved ones death was the result of an ongoing dispute with another teen.
SAN ANTONIO — A teen is dead and a suspect is on the run after a shooting near an east-side gas station on Sunday.
The grieving family of the teen has identified their loved one as 19-year-old Jordan Bocanegra, who would have celebrated his 20th birthday on July 1. Now they are left having to plan his funeral instead.
Bocanegra’s family says they are heartbroken over his death and, as they grieve, they came together for a memorial at the location where Jordan died.
“This is definitely gonna leave a big hole in everybody’s hearts. If you knew Jordan, you would definitely understand,” said Ashley Martinez, the teen’s cousin.
Dozens of red roses and candles placed in the formation of the letters “LLJ,” meaning “long live Jordan,” are now a memorial for 19-year-old at the corner of East Commerce Street and South Polaris.
Police say Jordan was shot at 11 a.m. at Stanley’s Gas Station on the 2200 block of East Commerce Street.
His family believes they know who did it.
They told police the teenager and another young man have had an ongoing dispute but his family says the other man was the aggressor.
“They used to live here in the neighborhood a long time ago and I know that particular neighbor, because he was their neighbor. [He] just always envied my cousins,” said Martinez.
Jordan’s cousin Ashley says he was visiting the neighborhood and putting gas in his car to go back to Hondo when the shooting happened.
Police say after Jordan was shot, he was able to drive away but crashed a block down the street.
A witness told KENS 5 off camera that he heard a gunshot and a crash and found Jordan with a gunshot wound to his head.
Martinez recalls getting the news that Jordan was gone.
“He told me ‘Jordan got shot, he’s dead.’ I immediately jumped out of bed and I rushed over here,” said Martinez.
Martinez says Jordan was just starting his life. They say he was a sweet, caring and respectable young man who loved his family and worked to help his mother pay bills, making sure everyone was taken care of.
“He comes from a very, very big and loving family. He just cared for his family that’s what he was all about. He was all about his family and the few friends that he did have,” said Martinez.
Jordan’s family says witnesses at the gas station were also able to identify the suspect but no word yet from police on any arrests made in the case.
“Please turn yourself in. You’re gonna get caught no matter what. Long live Jordan Bocanegra. We love you dad,” said Martinez.
