The Texas Longhorns will start the 2025 season ranked No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches polls.
AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns will enter the 2025 college football season as the No. 1 team in the nation.
The preseason AP top 25 poll, which was released on Monday, has the Longhorns ranked No. 1 in its first poll ahead of the college football season. It will be the only poll released before Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) games officially kick off on Aug. 23.
The Longhorns were also ranked No. 1 in the preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Aug. 4.
The Longhorns’ Week 1 opponent, reigning national champion and former Cotton Bowl foe The Ohio State University, came in at No. 3, meaning the Aug. 30 matchup in Columbus will set up a season-opening showdown.
Penn State, Georgia and Clemson – all of whom were College Football Playoff participants last season – round out the top five.
Following two straight appearances in the College Football Playoff, the Longhorns enter the 2025 season with massive expectations.
Quarterback Arch Manning will officially take the reins under center, and the former five-star recruit will understandably be under the spotlight all season. Despite only having started two games in his collegiate career to this point, the redshirt sophomore is already seen as the early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and is among the favorites to be the top overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft if he chooses to enter.
Aside from Manning, the Longhorns also return a number of key contributors on both sides of the ball, including defenders Anthony Hill Jr. and Colin Simmons who, along with Manning, were named to the the 2025 preseason All-America team by Athlon Sports.
