Longhorns rebound from Ohio State loss with blowout win over San Jose State

Arch Manning threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s win.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns have notched their first win of the 2025 season.

Following a disappointing loss to Ohio State in Week 1, the Longhorns rebounded in a big way on Saturday, blowing out San Jose State 38-7 at DKR.

The Longhorns were widely expected to dominate the Spartans, entering as massive betting favorites. Quarterback Arch Manning had a redeeming performance after struggling against Ohio State, finishing with 295 yards and four touchdowns on 19-of-30 passing. He did, however, throw an interception toward the end of the first half.

Through two weeks, it seems as though the young quarterback has developed a strong rapport with redshirt freshman wide receiver Parker Livingstone, who hauled in two of Manning’s touchdown passes in addition to his touchdown catch in Week 1. Livingstone also finished as the game’s leading receiver, finishing with 128 receiving yards on four catches.

CJ Baxter led the Longhorns in rushing, finishing with 64 yards on 13 carries, which paced the team. His running mate atop the backfield depth chart, Quintrevion Wisner, didn’t play on Saturday, having been ruled out prior to kickoff. Sophomore Jerrick Gibson finished second among the unit with 38 yards on seven carries.

The Longhorn defense was again strong, holding the Spartans to 273 yards of total offense. Senior defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau tallied an interception off Spartan quarterback Walker Eget toward the end of the first quarter, while sophomore defensive tackle Maraad Watson had somewhat of a coming-out party, finishing with 1.5 sacks.

The win puts the Longhorns at 1-1 on the season, with the new AP Poll rankings slated to be released on Monday. The Longhorns will play at home once again next Saturday, with a 3:15 p.m. kickoff against Texas-El Paso at DKR.
