LUMBERTON, Texas — The Lumberton Police Department is mourning the loss of K-9 Ayton, who died unexpectedly on Dec. 6, the department announced Saturday.

K-9 Ayton joined the department in 2022 and served alongside his handler, K-9 Sgt. Greg Mouton. Officials said the dog played a vital role in patrol work, handler protection, narcotics detection, and search and rescue operations. His work supported not only Lumberton officers but several surrounding agencies.

“K-9 Ayton was more than just a working dog,” Police Chief Danny Sullins said. “He was a trusted partner and a beloved member of our law enforcement family. The loss is deeply felt across the department.”

The department thanked the veterinary staff at Main Street Vet Clinic for the care they provided.

Ayton served nearly nine years as a loyal companion to Sgt. Mouton and was considered a cherished member of his family, according to police.

The department said K-9 Ayton will be remembered for his loyalty, courage and dedication to public safety.
