A new program that ride-hailing service Lyft launched in September to make people of certain genders feel more “confident” in the service, is now available in San Antonio. Lyft’s Women+ Connect program is now available in the Alamo City, allowing women and nonbinary passengers to be matched with drivers that are women or nonbinary, the company announced on November 2.
The company says in a press release that the program aims to make women and nonbinary people “feel more confident” in the driving experience. The program also encourages more women and nonbinary people to become Lyft drivers.
“Women+ Connect lets more women and nonbinary drivers get access to rideshare’s good, flexible earnings, and gives more riders a sense of comfort and camaraderie,” said Lyft CEO David Risher in the news release.
The program initially launched in just five cities but is now available in 50 cities, including San Antonio, Austin and Houston. Since the launch about 200,000 eligible riders already opted in to use the feature, and the early access cities saw about 60% more rides with women and nonbinary drivers.
Women and nonbinary people can sign up for Women+ Connect by downloading the latest version of the Lyft app. The option an then be turned on in the app under “Driving Preferences” and can be turned off at anytime, according to the news release.
