This sweet terrier mix may be shy at first, but once she knows you, Maggie is all hugs, belly rubs and love.
BULVERDE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
Meet Maggie, a five-and-a-half-year-old terrier mix with a heart as big as her smile, and a story you won’t forget.
Maggie has been patiently waiting for her forever family at the Bulverde Area Humane Society (BAHS) since September 9, 2023.
Her journey to the shelter started in the most unexpected way.
“Maggie ran in front of my car when I was coming back from the vet,” said Penny LaFlam, Dog Coordinator at BAHS. “I slammed on my brakes and thought I had hit her. When I got out to check on her, she was lying on her back in the middle of the road wagging her tail at me — not a scratch on her. I opened my car door and she hopped right in.”
And she’s been at the shelter ever since.
While Maggie can be a little shy when meeting new people, she blossoms once she feels safe. Staff say she becomes deeply loyal to those she trusts — and she’s known for giving excellent hugs.
In her kennel, Maggie loves carrying around a rubber toy in her mouth, and she enjoys peaceful walks or sitting out in a field watching everything happening around her.
And when it comes to treats? Beef liver is the way to her heart.
Maggie is considered dog selective, and her favorite friends tend to be smaller male dogs. She would do best in a home without cats and without small children, and she needs an adopter with solid dog experience who can help her feel confident and secure.
The good news: Maggie is fully vetted, healthy and has no special medical needs. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and on preventative care.
Maggie has now spent almost 900 days waiting for the family she deserves.
If you think you could be the one to give Maggie her fresh start, email the Bulverde Area Humane Society at bahshelter@yahoo.com.
Her adoption fee is only $100, since she has been in the shelter for more than a year.
Maggie’s forever home is out there — maybe it’s with you. 🐾

For whoever adopts Maggie, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
If you are interested in adding Maggie into your family, please email bahshelter@yahoo.com.
The fee to adopt Maggie would be only $100, which covers the cost of her healthcare, all vaccinations, flea preventative and more. The lower fee is because she’s been waiting over a year to be chosen.
Their adoption procedure starts with filling out an Adoption Contract, which can be downloaded here:
Adoption Contract DOG (pdf) – Normal adoption Fee $200
Adoption Contract CAT (pdf) – Adoption Fee $85
Your new friend will be ready for their new home after review by one of their Adoption Counselors.
All of their animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption and have been tested for heartworm or feline leukemia / aids. They all have their age appropriate vaccinations. All puppies, dogs & kittens are microchipped.
If you’re considering adopting a dog who will join one already in your home, BAHS encourages “Meet and Greets.” Visiting dogs must be spayed or neutered and have proof of current vaccinations. Talk to a shelter staff member about scheduling your “Meet and Greet” session before coming out with your dog.
And don’t forget BAHS now offers a one week foster to adopt trial period to see if they will work out in their new home.
The shelter is located at 3563 Kingsnake in Bulverde and they are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
For more information on adopting pets, please visit their website.
BAHS is hosting a Reading to the Cats and Dogs just once this year. It will be held on June 24. It’s an opportunity to grab your favorite book and come out to read to their animals from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.
All ages are welcome and the pets love it! There is no sign up necessary, all you need to do is arrive the day of the event with a book and closed toe shoes. After you get there, meet with them for a quick orientation before going off to read aloud to the dogs and cats. It’s a great chance for kids to brush up on their reading skills while making the animals feel loved. Everyone benefits. Also great for older folks as well. Connect with animals while keeping your brain active.
If you’d like to donate to the shelter CLICK HERE. Some of their greatest needs right now are beef liver treats and Pup-Peroni treats for the dogs and they always need more cat litter.
They have a complete list of items in which they are always in need of right here.
