Mail theft in Garden Ridge: Residents fight back with surveillance cameras

Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing over thirty pieces of mail in Garden Ridge, causing frustration among residents.

GARDEN RIDGE, Texas — Two men are accused of swiping mail straight from people’s boxes in Garden Ridge.

Robert Henry Blalock Jr. and Robert Henry Blalock the third were arrested by Bexar County deputies on Tuesday.

The two face theft charges for stealing over thirty pieces of mail. Their alleged actions have caused a lot of frustration for residents.

It wasn’t until some Garden Ridge residents installed a camera that police said the alleged thieves were caught.

The city told KENS 5 the two suspects were trying to do the same thing in San Antonio just before deputies caught up with them.

“I opened the box and there was no package there,” Karen Adams, who had her mail stolen, said.

When Adams initially opened her mailbox Sept. 2nd, she thought it was a mix-up.

She sent a notice to her neighbors and asked if anyone had her package.

That message was delivered but left unread. Come to find out her neighbors were experiencing the same thing.

“Since July, about 18 people have had their packages stolen,” she added.

From mailbox to mugshot, Robert Henry Blalock Junior and Robert Henry Blalock the third were arrested Tuesday by Bexar County deputies, accused of stealing over 30 pieces of mail.

Not just from this mailbox cluster, but from others too.

Police say someone put up a camera on a mailbox in the community that helped catch the duo.

“And there’s no sign of damage on these; someone had to have a key, in my opinion, to get in. It’s a violation, you spend good money and then you don’t get the product you paid for.”

Now, more residents are turning to cameras to keep an eye on their mail on boxes that have already been targeted.

“They have since posted notices here letting us know these mailboxes have been compromised.”

Neighbors say they are also being proactive to make sure their deliveries get to their destination.

“You can have it held at the post office – and want to make sure you have it at the post office – that’s what they’re recommending.”

Meanwhile, the community waits for justice to be delivered.

“They deserve justice and so hopefully that’s what they receive…and I’m hoping we don’t have that problem again.”

Garden Ridge police served a warrant at the suspect’s home yesterday.

They believe it will result in the filing of additional charges and possibly the arrest of more people.

This is an ongoing investigation.
