Man accused in hit-and-run that killed pregnant mother appears in court

Jose Sanchez faces two charges following a hit-and-run that killed pregnant Gloria Guevara.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man accused in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pregnant mother made his first court appearence Saturday night.

Jose Sanchez is facing two charges. Gloria Guevara, 22, was killed in the crash. Guevara’s passenger, her 16-year-old sister, was injured and remains in critical condition.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Guevara died around 7:45 p.m. Thursday near Tidwell and C-E King after her Ford Mustang was struck from behind by a white truck, causing her to veer over a raised median and into oncoming traffic. That’s when a Ford F-250 hauling a trailer struck her head-on. Investigators said the driver of the white truck that caused the initial crash kept going.

Court records show Sanchez is around 60 years old. He’s been working in construction for the past 20 years and lives with his wife and three adult daughters.

According to court documents, Sanchez was found the next day at a construction site with damage to his car and red paint from Guevara’s vehicle.

A judge set his bond at a total of $550,000.

Guevara’s family spoke to KHOU 11 reporter Jason Miles after the crash. Guevara has a 3-year-old child and was expecting her second.

“I consider her my granddaughter,” Lilian Cabrera said about Guevara. “She was a very, very, very, very good person,” Cabrera said. “She was very excited to have her baby because she lost a baby last year.”

Cabrera is helping Guevara’s husband plan her funeral while corresponding with her mother in Mexico. Guevara’s mother told us over the phone that she forgives the suspected hit-and-run driver.

“I think that God knows what he’s doing,” Cabrera said. “We’re asking God to give us the strength to deal with this.”

Sanchez is due back in court Monday.
