SAN ANTONIO — Multiple agencies responded to an armed robbery that ended in a major crash involving an 18-wheeler near Boerne Sunday afternoon.
Kerr County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the eastbound access road off I-10 around 11:15 a.m. The deputies had been advised by the Kimble County Sheriff’s Office of an armed robbery that had happened minutes earlier in Junction, Texas. A description of the suspect and vehicle was provided to the deputies.
Officials say upon arrival, deputies found the suspect driving a white semi-truck and tractor trailer traveling eastbound on I-10 in Kerr County. Deputies initiated a stop of the truck near mile marker 523. Initially, the driver pulled over but then failed to respond to commands to exit the vehicle. The driver then attempted to escape toward Kendall County.
Authorities say deputies from Kendall County deployed spike strips and deflated the front tires of the truck. The driver crossed the median near mile marker 535 and continued on the eastbound frontage road. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle while on a curve near mile marker 537 and crashed into the Lockaway Storage facility on the north side of Boerne.
According to officials, deputies recovered the cash drawer from the armed robbery and several items of clothing. Upon further investigation deputies discovered the tractor trailer was stolen out of California.
The driver, Eric Lee Hudson, 42, was arrested and booked in the Kerr County Jail for evading arrest and theft.
Officials say the crash caused the roads to be temporarily closed for a few hours and were reopened Sunday afternoon.
“Our teams collaborated well with other departments to end this pursuit and bring a dangerous suspect to justice. Our close relationship with neighboring counties is bad news for criminals trying to evade any jurisdiction on the Interstate,” said Sheriff Larry L. Leitha. “This kind of reckless behavior not only endangers the robbery victims and law enforcement, but many innocent travelers in the path of an unpredictable suspect. The stakes are even higher considering the mass of a tractor trailer compared to passenger vehicles. Our team did a great job intercepting and staying with this threat to public safety until the suspect was in custody.”
