Man arrested after domestic dispute leads to hours-long standoff in south San Antonio, police say

Police said an alleged assault overnight led to an hours-long standoff with officers near Mission San Juan that came to an end just before noon Wednesday.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff near Mission San Juan on the city’s south side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said the situation that unfolded early on Wednesday in the 9100 block of Graf Road, stemmed from an earlier incident that began around midnight at a separate, unspecified location.

According to SAPD, a man believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s had just broken up with his girlfriend and allegedly assaulted her at her home. Police said the woman’s husband and children were safely removed from the situation.

Authorities said officers later received a call around 4 or 5 a.m. reporting the man was inside his truck outside that initial location, armed with a gun and threatening to take his own life. At some point, police said the man’s wife arrived to attempt to talk him down.

He drove away and ended up near Mission San Juan, where police said he remained barricaded inside his vehicle for several hours.

Officers shut down entrances and exits to the park area as a precaution while working to resolve the situation.

According to police, officers were able to communicate with the man and told him he could prevent the situation from escalating further if he exited the vehicle. Authorities said he eventually complied and was taken into custody without incident.

Police said no shots were fired and no additional injuries were reported.

The man was arrested and is facing a misdemeanor assault charge, according to SAPD.
