SAN ANTONIO — Authorities have arrested a man for allegedly striking a student diagnosed with autism in the face with a “closed fist” while employed at a Northside ISD high school.
Adam Verastegui was hired as an Instructional Assistant for Northside ISD in 2018, and was assigned to the Autism Unit at Taft High School at the time of the crime.
According to the arrest affidavit, on Jan. 23, Verastegui struck a student who is diagnosed with autism, a speech impairment and intellectual ability in the face with a closed fist. The student was evaluated and reportedly had “some redness” on his chin, which is where he stated Verastegui had hit him.
The affidavit states Verastegui can be seen committing the crime on surveillance footage.
Verastegui was arrested and faces an injury to a child charge.
