Man arrested in connection with fatal weekend shooting at apartment complex in east SA

Police say that the suspect apparently believed that the victim stole something from him.

SAN ANTONIO — Police are investigating after a man was found fatally shot early Sunday morning at an apartment complex on the east side.

SAPD officers were dispatched to the complex on the 1500 block of Upland Road at around 4:30 a.m. for reports of gunfire. When they arrived at the location, they found a man with a gunshot wound in the breezeway of the apartment complex.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the victim, now identified as 41-year-old Marquis Green, went outside to grab an item from his vehicle when the 34-year-old Gregory Cunningham Jr. approached him.

During the argument, police say they both started struggling over a gun, with Cunningham eventually shooting Green. He was taken into custody Sunday afternoon.

According to an arrest affidavit, Cunningham was upset at Green, “believing (Green) had stolen his personal property.” Investigators reviewed surveillance footage which captured the killing, records show.

Cunningham is now facing a murder charge.
