Man arrested in Galveston hit-and-run that killed grandfather riding bike to work

An 18-year-old turned himself in after a truck part left at the scene helped police trace the vehicle to its owner, investigators say.

GALVESTON, Texas — An 18-year-old Cypress man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 77-year-old Galveston grandfather who was riding his bicycle to work early Sunday morning.

Aiden Prause turned himself in to the Galveston Police Department on Friday morning after learning investigators were searching for him. He is charged with collision involving personal injury or death, a second-degree felony, and his bond was set at $100,000.

The crash happened early Sunday morning on 53rd Street near the intersection of Avenue R. According to police, Fidel Estrada of Galveston was riding his bike when he was hit by a white or silver truck. A witness called 911 and stayed at the scene until authorities arrived, but the driver had left.

Estrada was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A damaged truck part left behind at the scene proved crucial to the investigation. Investigators used that evidence to trace the truck to its owner and contacted them as part of their investigation. Police say that’s when Prause learned authorities were searching for him and decided to turn himself in.

Estrada, a father of four, was on his way to work when he was hit.
