Man arrested on DWI charge dies after medical episode in San Antonio Police custody

A 61-year-old man arrested on suspicion of DWI died after experiencing a medical episode while being transferred to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

SAN ANTONIO — A 61-year-old man arrested on suspicion of DWI died Friday after experiencing a medical episode while being transferred to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, according to San Antonio police.

SAPD identified the man as Darryl Dwayne Valadez. Officers initially took Valadez into custody on a charge of driving while intoxicated. While he was being moved into the custody of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at the Justice Intake and Assessment Annex, police say he suffered a medical episode.

Emergency Medical Services were called, and Valadez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by the medical examiners office.

SAPD said the incident is being treated as an in-custody death and remains under investigation. No additional details have been released.  

This death marks the 12th death associated with the Bexar County Jail.
